Essential Skills is a super "Extra" qualification to have!

To get this qualification you have to do the following:

  • Carry out two tasks - these will be given to you by your teacher
  • Explain how you are going to carry each task (e.g. I am going to look at sport magazines to help me with the design of my own. I will then do a sketch to show what it will look like and give this to my teacher for some feedback)
  • Health & Safety - how will you stay safe in the ICT room? (give 3 statements and explain WHY! e.g. I am going to tuck my bag under the table so that people do not trip over it)
  • Folder structure - Evidence this through print screens. Create a folder called Essential Skills, inside this create 2 SUBFOLDERS called Unit 1 and Unit 2).
  • Carry out NON ICT Research - this will involve looking at magazines/books/leaflets/posters etc.
  • Carry out ICT Research - Show you can use search engines AND do advanced searches. You will have to show you are aware of copyright related to any information you use (HINT: look for the C copyright sign - screenshot it and use it as evidence).
  • Show you can exchange information electronically - you can send/reply/forward/add attachments. This can be done by email or Twitter! (You cannot add attachments in Twitter so must use email). You must also show you can back up your work to USB. - this is why you need a memory stick!
  • Show you can put numbers into a spreadsheet, develop it and use it in your magazine. This is the skills you MUST show:
  • Add borders & shading
  • Add a column/row
  • Change row height/column width
  • Align text (Left/Centre/Right)
  • Format numbers to currency (£) and change decimal places
  • Add 3 formulas (SUM/AVERAGE/MAX/MIN are good ones to use)
  • Change angle of text and merge cells
  • Edit an image
  • Create a graph based on this data - must have a title, label the x and y axis.
  • Evaluation - what skills did you learn? How did you make the task suitable for purpose (i.e. if your magazine was aimed at teenagers, how did you meet the needs of this audience? Did you include suitable images?)
